Just a question ....


I get a LOT of link exchange requests daily (as I run a lot of sites). Usually it is about 8 - 15 per day.


Do I need to treat them as spam or not ?


Recently I tried to email myself (with help of Arelis tool) and my hosting company tells me that they receive spam complaints and so I need to stop it smileys/smiley6.gif


So what shall I do ? Report as spammers to hosting company of all these my competitors ? or what ?

If your using the out of the box email templates than most likely some people are going to complain that your spamming.


I would customize the email a little to make it soundmore like it's coming from a real person.

I think spam is the sending on bulk unsolicited commercial email.

So if Tom from mysite.com sends an email to you at webmaster@yoursite.com and says "hey I liked your site, how about we swap links" it is NOT spam.

If Tom get a program to crawl the web for "related" sites and you get an email like "hey I found you pages http://www.youtsite.com/somesillypage.html really good. Please swap links" AND it gets sent out to 100's of people it probably IS spam.

The thing is for spam to be spam it has to be BULK email.

Also think about this before you go off and complain about people spamming you. How many sites do you have? Do they all sell the same thing? Chances are that you could be considered a search engine spammer if you have sooo many sites. Perhaps all these webmasters who you are about to report should report all your sites for spamming google or inktomi. How would you feel about that?

My advice is sit back, count your money and don't stress out about it. Stress causes cancer and we don't want that.

If lots of webmasters want to trade links with you they must think you are pretty good. Take it as a compliment.

How can a person actively beadvertising a link exchange and provide contact info on thier site... and THEN complain that you spam them asking for an exchange?
