In Anything Else Area...
Anyone know a good mail server to use... I need to integrate it with ColdFusion (usually easy) - but also need good garbage (spam)protection on it as well as webmail option if I can... Also need good relay protection as well...
Not sure what my price range is yet... Need to know functionality...
Thanx...

MailEnable is a popular choicefor windoze 2003 servers. Their basic version is free and Pro version is for $220 (1 server license with unlimited accounts on that server). I think Pro version has webmail and good spam protection and basic version doesn't have webmail but does have some spam protection. Check http://www.mailenable.com/for details.

I know you are just kidding, but if not... here is a common path to sendmail (your may be different).
/usr/sbin/sendmail

Well we know who the script-a-holics are and the network admins are now dont we !
If you are using just for you, assuming, sendmail is the way to go. If you will be using for over a few thousand mail boxes than definitely Exchange. .. Exchange has a great Webmail interface, but is $$ .

Merle are you running windoze or linux/unix?</span><br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">

HeadCracker there is nothing wrong with sendmail / </span>squirrelmail.
It will scale up to 1000's of users easy. But then you have to be
running linux / bsd to use it. Also a lot less problems with
virus / worms on a non windoze box.</span><br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">
<br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">
I'd also recommend mailscanner to anybody on a *nix box to help stop spam and virus emails at the server.</span>

Running W2k Server... And Cold Fusion 5...
Really only looking to use it on an isolated account... And wont be creating users... Wanting to auto email people thru ColdFusion when sites are added... Or users need to email other users... Very basic needs... Not spam needs if it is sounding that way...

Sendmail ? OK, let me hash it out for you. After 15 years experience, certified with an MCSE, SCA, CCNP, and manage a network with 60K usersand with remote locations globaly, sendmail was not the answer. We run sendmail and exchange. The sendmail is more resilient yes, but requires a lot more work. Much betterwith virus attacks however, "Open Source" means the bad guys have your code too. Exchange also requires some work and yes, it is expensive and also requires some hardware to support it but, in a large global enterprise, compared to sendmail, I prefer exchange.
For the crazy Linux only folks-lets get this over with....Nothing is free. I recently went to a Linux vs MS debate and I asked the question, can a linux fresh out the box allow me to setup a web server, group policy my network and lock it down, push or publish software to all clients, etc., etc, etc.. ?? The answer is NO. You must hunt down other plugins, ( if available or your buying it ) and spend the time melding it into your network. Oh, and if you didnt document it and leave the company, the guy that replaced you will have a lot of work on his hands. The MS products do, and yes they are expensive comparativly. But work nicely.
I especially love the "MS is for idiots because they need a GUI", well let me ask you, would you rather be on the golf course at 4pm knowing that the server will page your alpha pager if something pops up, or spend till the wee hours of the night scripting and coding ? we are in the 20th century right ? FUNNY , a recent conversation with a colleauge in where I said, why should I have to type a command line to dismount a CD drive when I could just click on the drive and pop it out ? He replied, you can do that in linux, it has a GUI. Gee looks a lot like Windows !! So why not use the f*cking thing !
Listen we use Unix/Linux and also MS 2003 AD and all the flavors of apps that go with both. The hard core Linux guys work ten times harder than the MS guys and results are the same. I have seen it first hand. Sure the occasional flaw or bug slips through, but if the bulk of the hacking were directed to Linux, it would be just as bad a problem.
And Gates is not the Devil or the Antichrist. He is just a guy that was smart enough to make a fortune. You wouldnt do any different in his shoes. Besides, MS donates millions in charity, grants, education, etc.. I dont see the Linux community ponying up. Oh, I forgot, its free....
That being said, like I said in my earlier post, Sendmail would do the trick for your purpose....

Gonna start the testing today... Reinstalled entire server... Using Ghost now as well... So I can pull the garbage servers off and reinstall to default in about 12 mins now - rather than 5 hrs without... (all the critical updates etc...)
So if anyone has last minute additions for what mail server to use with good spam control - throw the name in the hat... I'll try test it...

What kind of setup do you got? Are you doing all this to host OP sites???

Running 2 servers now, W2K Server... Been doing web stuff since about '98... Mostly had bad luck with hosting services... And I use ColdFusion to run my websites... When I first started running web stuff ColdFusion wasn't offered much and using with hosting service it was painful to say the least... So - bought and ran my own servers... Quite a rollercoaster ride in doing that as well but, it was one hell of a learning curve.
Honesty - most people could do it for about $1500 - $2000startup cost (bitch at Dell - to get the server software included) and less than $1000 per yr for annual costs...
My biggest problem though has been Mail Servers - cause u run your own domains, u most likely need to run your own mail server... Then u get into all kinds of spam and filtering problems...

hmm i host my own dell server for
%65
paid under $400 after rebate for the machine, installed freebsd ...
hosts 20+ sites (some with heavy mysql dynamic pages)
hald gig ram, celeron 2ghz some ATA
had to reboot once 164 days ago otherwise it would be up for like 500+ days :)
(i messed up routing -bsd is pickier than linux with that on some things)
I know with the same config and 10- sites that would be a loaded server on windows ....
on bsd Load Averages2.03 2.01 2.00
ahm did i say freeBSD was Free ? :)
I also have a linux server now at an other hosting 65 a month as well......same cheapo machine ... no load on it yet though ....
ahm mailer ... the original question :)
sendmail auth + imapssl pretty safe, but pretty horror to config :) (worked at ISP on mail so sendmail is my friend:)

I have had no luck with sendmail... Trying Argosoft Mail Server Pro right now... It was up and running in about 5 minutes...
Instal simple and easy... Easy Web interface for both mail admin and general email accounts...
Just need to sort out the open relay and spam control... If that works... I am in business...
If not... Ctrl - Alt - Delete... Ghost it...

Verdict is in for now - Argosoft Mail Server Pro seems to work fine...
Easy to set up, easy web interface for both admin and users...
Open relay shut - got an ORDB confirmation... Yet allows the auto emailing I need to do...
Have not had chance to test spam filters... But seems to work fine otherwise...
