Internet prescribing may fall in the outskirts of telemedicine but it is still defined as telemedicine , to quote the ATA:
"Patient consultations using telecommunications to provide medical data, which may include audio, still or live images, between a patient and a health professional for use in rendering a diagnosis and treatment plan. This might originate from a remote clinic to a physician's office using a direct transmission link or may include communicating over the Web."
The different levels of prescribing , formulated by ATA ,starting with the safest first;
Levels of prescribing:
*Prescribing based on a physical examination resulting in a diagnosis by a licensed physician.
*Prescribing based on a examination of medical records completed by the primary care physician who has physically seen the patient.
*Prescribing based on an electronic visual and vital sign data examination resulting in a diagnosis by a licensed physician using telemedicine remotely
*Prescribing based on an electronic vital sign data examination resulting in a diagnosis by a licensed physician using telemedicine remotely.
*Prescribing based on a questionnaire filled out by the patient that is relying on information received from a previous physical examination that resulted in a diagnosis by a licensed physician.
*Prescribing based on a questionnaire that is relying on information filled out by the patient .
*Prescribing based on no patient examination or questionnaire
